Histochemical Study on Glycogen and Acid Mucopolysaccharide in Salivary Glands of Isoproterenol administered Albino Rats

Abstract
To investigate the effect of isoproterenol on the salivary glands of albino rats, a single dose of 8mg /100gm body weight was intraperitoneally injected, and, these animal were sacrificed on the 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 14 days after administration. Changes of glycogen (by Best¢¥s carmine stain method and Bensly¢¥s method) and acid mucopolysaccharides (by Steedman¢¥s alcian blue method and alcian blue method) in the submaxillary gland of albino rats were observed.
The results were as follows:
1) Carmine affinity of the secretory acini in the submaxillary gland was increased on first day after the administration and then gradually decreased. In duct system, carmine affinity was decreased on the third days after administration.
2) In sublingual glands, alcian blue (pH 2.5) affinity was slowly decreased from first day and markedly decreased on the fifth day, after administration.
3)On the whole, alcian blue affinity was stronger in sublinual gland than in submaxillary gland.
